Introduction to LIMITS '15: First workshop on computing within limits by Daniel Pargman and Barath Raghavan

In June 2015 we organized a workshop of a diverse group of amazing researchers and practitioners from computing and beyond to discuss a critical but often unexamined question: What is the role of computing in a global society facing exogenous limits (such as ecological limits)? Today’s society is increasingly dependent upon and enmeshed with computing and technology, and over the past decades, in parallel with the advancements in computing, we have seen scientific developments in our understanding of the fundamental limits with which societies must cope. As a result, we believe it is time to begin considering how computing can serve society in the future as the consequences of these limits affect us.

LIMITS ’15 was the first meeting in what we believe will be an important area of research, and the papers you see in this issue are a subset of those presented that include many new ideas and perspectives from among the 30 researchers present from five countries. A number of computer science fields were represented including AI, ICT4D, HCI, software engineering, systems, and networking.

We believe LIMITS represents a paradigm shift in the way we think about computing, and changes the context within which computer scientists pose questions in and across their sub-fields. LIMITS demands that societal and ecological needs become our highest priorities, requiring that technology be developed with those priorities in mind.

We hope you enjoy the papers, and welcome you to participate in a future convening of LIMITS.

We are grateful for the support of the Newkirk Center for Science at Society at the University of California, Irvine.
