Digital Cultural Heritage and Tourism Recommendations for Cultural Institutions

Abstract

The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism launched in October 2014 a set of recommendations addressed to the cultural institutions that aim to promote their heritage and tourism offer through the use of technology and digital means. The editors of the recommendations were some Italian experts of the Ministry in the field of digital cultural heritage and tourism; the members of the AthenaPlus consortium reviewed and integrated the text that was presented on the occasion of the International Conference "The reuse of digital cultural content in education, tourism and leisure: an opportunity for cultural institund tions and creative industries, an investment for the future", held in Rome on October 2, 2014.

Author Biographies

Maria Teresa Natale, Ministry of Culture and Cultural Activities, Italy

Dr. Maria Teresa Natale has been working since 1985 as a consultant for services to cultural institutions on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. From 2002 to 2008 she participated in the national and European activities of the three MINERVA projects as content manager of the related websites and expert in the working groups on the quality of cultural websites. She cooperated with the MEDCULT project funded by UNESCO and coordinated the “Digital Heritage†work package of STACHEM. Since 2008 she has been technical coordinator of the ATHENA project, and takes part in the Europeana Working Group on users. Maria Teresa Natale is also known as the “graffiti queen†(see http://romethesecondtime.blogspot.com/2009/10/graffiti-rome-primer.html) in Rome, where she maintains a portal with more than 11 thousand graffiti from around the world (see also http://www.lasciailsegno.it/index.php?it/1/home)

Marzia Piccininno

Marzia Piccininno is an archaeologist, and was director from 2002 through 2008 at the Archaeological Museum of Valmontone (Rome). From 2002 to 2008 she participated in the national and European activities of the three MINERVA projects (MINERVA, MINERVAplus, and MINERVA eC). Then she elaborated and organised the MEDCULT project funded by UNESCO to spread the MINERVA results across the Mediterranean basin. Most recently, she coordinated the 'Digital Heritage' work package of STACHEM and was responsible for the content coordination for Europeana within the ATHENA, Linked Heritage and AthenaPlus projects under the coordination of the Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of the Italian Libraries. She was also involved in other projects of the Europeana ecosystem (EuropeanaPhotography, Judaica Europeana, Partage Plus, Europeana Food & Drink) and in EU initiatives on eInfrastructures for digital cultural heritage (DC-NET and INDICATE). Expertise in organisation, EU policy on digital cultural heritage, networking, and workflow facilitation in collaborative projects.
